A Review from the Wings

Last week I was part of a show called, Edges: A Song Cycle, written by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul . This show seemed to be a hit with the audience and the cast loved getting laughs at jokes we had been hearing every night for the past month. Normally, reviews of shows come from someone sitting in the audience, but I got to work with these cast members and see all the hard work they put into this show. Watching each soloist express the characters voices from off in the wings made it seem magical and I could not be more proud of everyone who shared their talent on stage.

The set and lighting were also really great.  During the “Facebook song”, the lighting changed drastically to emphasize the soloist and really captured the moment. Although the set was very simple, it left the actors more room to create their character and be completely bear with the audience.

Of course the cast and crew were amazing. Working with people like these always brings a smile to my face. They worked so hard to bring this emotional show to the forefront and I am proud to say I was a part of the team. The crew made sure everything went together like clockwork and we couldn’t have done it without them.

Coming from the actor’s point of view, I loved singing the songs in this show. They were packed full of emotion and “I Once Knew” was no exception. I loved being able to have raw emotion on stage and to be able to connect with everyone out in front of me. Even Megan McDonough, a fellow cast member, says that “The songs were challenging and the performances were raw and emotional.”  The cast had a challenge nailing the songs but overall, I think they did a great job.

Director Wynn Alexander and musical director Tim Larrick really helped shape this show and always provide the students and community of Wilmington College with a show that not only entertains but leaves them thinking.  This show really communicated to the audience because of the clear way that the two put the show together.

Edges was an incredible experience.” McDonough says. “I am so thankful that it was my last musical production at Wilmington College.”  Because of the hard work and dedication from all the members of the show, we made a pretty great end product. To all that have been part of this musical ride with me, thank you for a wonderful four years of Wilmington College musicals. It’s been a great ride and I am so proud of all the work everyone has done.
