A Student’s Thoughts on the AmeriCorp Budget Loss

AmeriCorps NCCC is losing its budget soon. A generation of community service thrown out of the window because of our President who promised to ‘help’ America, somehow dissolving a federal program that promotes community service throughout the country doesn’t seem like help to me.

AmeriCorps was an integral part of my life and many others. I spent 11 months with a team of 8 other individuals, I was able to travel to Vicksburg, Mississippi, Atlanta, Georgia, Sacramento, California, Fort Worth, Texas, and Baton Rouge, Louisiana, as well as all the states in between. I gained over 2,000 hours of community service and my team and I had a blast every step of the way. The friends I made in AmeriCorps have become life-long friends that I cherish today. And now it’s all ending.

On February 12, 2018, the President sent his official Fiscal Year 2019 (FY 2019) Budget request to Congress. This budget proposes the elimination of the Corporation for National and Community Service in FY 2019, and provides funding for an orderly shutdown, according to nationalservice.gov.

Being able to say I was a part of AmeriCorps was something I treasured, and now for it to end so abruptly it seems such a shame, especially when I realize that the future generations won’t be able to say that. This plan of budget cuts from Trump all started when he was elected and began the slow drain from the Public Broadcasting which include PBS and NPR. Then the proposed plan to cut down a huge swath of publicly protected land at Bears Ears and Grand Staircase monuments in Utah.

It seems Trump is determined to go down in history as the President who took the most from us, while promising us the world. We only have one Earth so far, and the way things are looking it doesn’t seem like we’ll find another one any time soon, so why wouldn’t we invest in ourselves? Why is Washington allowing this gross misuse of power to continue to destroy things that are dear to us as Humans.

For me, AmeriCorps was the straw that broke the camels back. I absolutely loved my time in AmeriCorps, my friends loved their time in AmeriCorps, sure it was hard at times and it wasn’t always something you wanted to do. But together we powered through it.

I am severally disappointed in what our government decides on. And it just keeps getting worse. What can we do to stop the crimes being committed against us? Going to https://front.moveon.org/ is a good place to start. Sign the petition to keep AmeriCorps and many other organizations alive.
