“Movies will make you famous; Television will make you rich; But theatre will make you good.” This quote said by author Terrence Mann could not be more accurate, especially in light of the theatre productions at Wilmington College. Featuring many talented students, the production Blithe Spirit was presented from April 10th to 12th in the Heiland Theatre, leaving the audience on the edge of their seats, yet laughing throughout the entire performance.
Directed by Wynn Alexander, Blithe Spirit is a play written by Noel Coward, a famed playwright in the mid-20th century. The finely picked cast consisted of Timothy Wiederhold as Charles, the main character who hosted a dinner party and invited a laughable medium played by Bekah Muchmore. The medium, named Madame Arcati, unknowingly summoned the ghost of Charles’ first wife Elvira, played by Arizona Craycraft. She proceeded to haunt Charles and his wife Ruth, played by Kerri Davis, causing mayhem and an ironic turn of events that left the audience captivated. The actors and actresses were fantastic at the roles in which they had been placed, and it revealed all the great talent that is found in the Wilmington College Department of Theatre and the students on campus.
Some comments made by Arizona, who played Elvira, express how worthwhile her experience was. “This show was so fun to do and Elvira was such an amazing role and I had so much fun bringing her to life. My advice would be to just go for it and don’t be afraid to feel silly. Theatre is a way of life and once you’ve become a part of it, you become a part of a very close-knit family, especially at Wilmington, which is wonderful!” For any others interested, it is a fun way to get to know people and have fun while getting into the theatrical side of things at Wilmington. WC student Kristine Sunins saw the performance Saturday and shared that “it was very entertaining and witty. If you [enjoy] acting, then it seems like it would be a great activity to be involved in.”
For more information about plays that occur on campus, watch for signs and be available when the day comes to audition, and do not be afraid to try something with new people. It will be a rewarding experience to be part of. Students can also contact Wynn Alexander at email@example.com.
