College football report

For some college football teams in November, a chance to play for their conference title is on the line. More teams are becoming bowl eligible, and the rivalry games are also in full swing this month.

Alabama, which has been number 1 since the first week of the season back in September, had a victory in Louisiana this past weekend as they came back to beat LSU 21 to 17 in an instant classic.

The number 2 ranked Kansas State Wildcats are undefeated on the season and on their way towards a Big 12 title. To do this, KSU must win the two final road games back to back against TCU and Baylor, then win against Texas at home. Not only would this give them an undefeated season and conference title but a chance to make it to the national championship game in Miami.

Two other teams that are in the hunt for the national championship game at the end of the year are Notre Dame and Oregon. The Ducks are ranked number 4 in the BCS polls. If the Ducks win their final games, they will be in the 2 annual PAC 12 championship game at the end of November. For Notre Dame, they played two games at home against Stanford and Pittsburg. They won those two games in overtime. They beat Stanford 33 to 30. The Irish are 9-0 and ranked number 3 in the BCS standings.

A team in the Legends division is the Nebraska Cornhuskers.

“I think Nebraska has some bad karma on their side after the bad pass interference call against Michigan State last weekend,” said Paul Moke, a Political Science professor.

There are still three teams in this division that have a chance to go to Indy. Northwestern needs to win out and Nebraska must lose at least two games for Northwestern to make it to the title game at the end of the month. They head to the Big House to take on the Wolverines of Michigan this weekend. Iowa also has a shot to make it, and just like Northwestern, they need to win out and have Michigan and Nebraska lose at least two of their last three games. The last team in the running is Michigan. After losing to Nebraska two weeks ago, they need the Cornhuskers to lose one game and win out the rest of the year if they want to win a Big Ten title.

“Our goal from the beginning of the year is to win a Big Ten title,” said Brady Hoke, head coach of Michigan, after the 44 to 14 loss to Alabama in week one. They have to beat Northwestern, Iowa, and Ohio State if they want that dream to come true.

In the Leaders Division, Penn State and Ohio State are not able to go to Indy, therefore, Wisconsin and Indiana are in the running. With a heartbreaking lose to Michigan State, the Badgers must win out if they want to make it back to the title game for the second straight year and try for their third straight Rose Bowl appearance.

“Ohio State might go undefeated, but the games that they could lose are going to come in the last weeks of the season against Wisconsin and Michigan,” said Mason Dickerson, a student here at Wilmington.

The Buckeyes are 10-0 and 6-0 in the Big Ten. They cannot go to a Bowl game at the end of the season, but they can still take a share of the AP national championship with an undefeated season. The Michigan vs. Ohio State game is on November 24.
