Date rape activist Katie Koestner to speak at Wilmington College

WC students paint rock for Take Back the Night April 2017

On Monday, September 18, Katie Koestner, the first date rape survivor to speak out nationally and the founder of the Take Back the Night Foundation, will be speaking at Wilmington College about student safety on college campuses.

Katie brought her story forward in the early 1990s at age eighteen and has been a leader in the movement to end sexual violence ever since. Her testimony on Capitol Hill was instrumental in the passage of federal student safety legislation.

Katie will be relating key facts and statistics weaved with personal anecdotes and real-life stories to empower and educate students on campus about the issue of sexual violence on college campuses and what can be done about it.

Susan Neuhart, WC’s Survivor Advocate in the spring of 2017, had the idea to have Katie come to campus and reached out to her.

“I am hoping to build a culture of honor on campus where victims feel safe to speak out and students are empowered to stand up for one another.” – Sarah Martin, Survivor Advocate

WC’s Sexual Assault Hotline Team and It’s On Us led a Take Back the Night march in April of 2017. The event included a march across campus in protest and direct action against rape and other forms of sexual, relationship and domestic violence. Katie was one of the women who initiated the establishment of the Take Back the Night Foundation in support of these events throughout the United States and the world.

The event will be made possible for the campus and community with the assistance of the Hotline Team members.
