Movie Review: Mountain Between Us

When two strangers find themselves stranded in sub zero temperatures after their plane has crashed, and no one has come for them, they embark on the journey of a lifetime. Through the multiple obstacles they both endure, the two stranger begin to discover abilities they never knew they had.

Academy Award winning director Hany Abu-Assad captures the harsh reality of being trapped in a significantly less than ideal situation perfectly, although the movie could have used more action as it was depicted in the trailer. Instead, the movie was more focused on the human connection between a melancholy neurosurgeon (Idris Elba) and a curious photojournalist (Kate Winslet). There is no denying that any movie in which two people are stranded together, chemistry is bound to arise. However, the two actors seemed as though they were just saying the words rather than feeling them. The chemistry between the two talented actors seemed forced on screen which took seemed to lessen the audience’s engagement in the film.

The two actors were amazing, however they were not meant to be cast in a film like this one together. When the movies action scenes were on the screen, the directing and landscape was comparable to no other. The intensity and unique nature of the situation made up for the lack of chemistry between the two actors.

All in all, the movie unfortunately did not live up to the standards that many expected. Fear not though, there is no doubt that these actors and a director like Abu-Assad will make a masterpiece in the near future… they always do. Just maybe not together next time.
