Relay for Life Reveals Need for More Campus Support

Shelby Dodds, Relay for Life Co-Chair

On October 21, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., campus organizations gathered to participate in Relay for Life, an annual event at WC to raise money and awareness for cancer research.

Keni Brown, Service Leaders Executive Board (SLEB) President, says, “I think it went well, we just need more and more campus support.” There were a total of seven groups present at Relay. “There were several organizations interested in participating that ended up not coming, which hurt our whole final attempt at raising funds and research.”

Yet on a more hopeful note, with activities prior to Relay and on the day of Relay, WC raised over $5,000 in funds. “Many showed a tenacity to raise funds, as displayed in the chain link activity where we raised an astonishing amount of money,” shares Keni.

Much excitement was expressed about the games, occurring hourly after the Caregiver/Survivor Lap and Brunch.

The event was put together by Andrea Barga and Shelby Dodds, both members of SLEB, and the Relay committee comprised of student leaders.

The SLEB team is working together to come up with ideas to better Relay for Life at WC in the future, as well as considering additional fundraising events to bring to campus.
